August has been quite a productive month for me as I’ve finally been able to complete demos of two new songs… well actually, I thought I was done with three of those new tunes but my bandmates told me that number three right there just wasn’t good enough. Which is kinda weird for me since I was convinced this song was one of my songwriting highlights. You fuckers.
So I flushed it all away and started back from scratch in a different key, different tuning, different vibe… and I’m going through hell with this goddamn song not really knowing where I’m headed at. Anyway… I trust my friends. They’ll let me know if I get carried away.
Speaking of which, Tony told us he’d probably not be playing with us anymore after I brought up the idea of bringing in another guitar player which is something I’ve been wanting to do for years. Plus he’s not feeling the new songs (“too metal and arranged”) and would like to keep the power trio thing going on while I kinda wanna get away from that.
Oh well… anyway, that’s how it is and maybe things will change in the coming months who knows ?

HAVE MERCY My Oldest Friend — KATATONIA The Fall Of Hearts — METALLICA Ride The Lightning — RADIOHEAD A Moon Shaped Pool
Had been trying for months to see my mate Yannick from Voice Of The Unheard to grab the Have Mercy “My Oldest Friend” record he had been holding on to for me for over a year. We finally succeeded and I’m super stoked to have this piece of history in my personal collection. This band’s first album, “The Earth Pushed Back”, was one of my biggest crush from this past three or four years and I just wanted to get my hands on their debut EP for the fuck of it. Brilliant emo/power-pop/whatever-you-call-it like not so many come up with these days. Love it.
The Katatonia boys really surprised me with this new record, digging into super-complex and proggy song structures when I had anticipated a maybe more straightforward approach. Though quite surprising in its form, the record is still very much Katatonia in its style with Jonas’ insanely beautiful vocals over Anders’ deep layers of soaring guitars. Magnificent work (as always) although some structures seem unnecessarily complex in my very humble opinion. Still, I’d be willing to sell my soul to write such a splendid record.
Also got my hands on Metallica‘s “Ride The Lightning” remastered reissue which of course is as awesome as this stainless classic is and then there’s the latest Radiohead record, “A Moon Shaped Pool”, that totally conquered me after struggling with it a bit on first listens. Probably my favorite release of theirs since “Amnesiac” fifteen years ago.
Thanks for checking out my monthly blabber.
‘Til next month fellas!
